Last summer I was sitting in Mass and the Priest said, “it’s not too late to be a Saint”. I laughed and thought, what does that mean? Still not quite sure so, this is spiritual direction for that.
I still think it’s in the giving it up where the getting is. Kind of like a diet, once you get those jeans on, even if they’re not snapped, is when you can sense what you’re really giving up. The focus is where it’s at.
I lived next door to a Saint when I was little. My mom used to say that about the lady next door, “She’s a Saint”. I didn’t know what that meant, but I thought of it every time I looked at her. Now, as an adult, I think my mom was right about that. The lady next door went home this past year and I smile now when I think of her. I am a lover of Paul’s letters. I have a small collection of books and The Navarre Bible’s “Captivity Letters” is one of my favorites... the pages are falling out.
I love this image of the prism. Makes me think of one of my most very favorite movies, “Pollyanna”. “Don’t be a scare baby”… that’s so totally me.
I’m off to the library today to look for a book on all the Saints, I need a friend. And, I’m going to rent “Pollyanna”. Been way too long since I’ve seen that movie. Thank you again, Father, for the spiritual direction.

Converting to Catholicism brought me into the awareness of saints. My father-in-law, gave me his own Daily Missal when he saw my childlike enthusiam. And finally, when other people asked me my "horoscope sign", I could talk to them about my patron saint, and ask them, no matter what their faith, who their patron was.
I love your idea of choosing a saint you easily relate to, and one you have nothing in common with; the completeness of the Christian community has a spark...You Fr. Barron! God Speed!

Anybody, please feel free to correct me, but at this point in my journey I have come to realize that it is HE/God, that picks us and not the other way around. We are designed for a unique purpose. Sainthood is attainable in many walks of life, and there are many Saints walking this earth today that will never be recognized as Saints in this life by the Church. I think more would strive for Sainthood if the Church stated as much and in a very public way. Further, the length of time it takes for the Church to decide if a man or woman is a Saint does not take away from the fact that they are Saints even during that time of descernment. Example: while we are all waiting for John Paul II to be recognized officially as a Saint, we can ask him for his prayers for our intentions... afterall, there must be a record of miracles attributed to a possible Saint for Sainthood to be granted and the only way to dertermine the origin of the miracle is to ask for the assistance of one deceased that you believe is a Saint. One of the reasons I am using John Paul II as an example is that I believe he has declared more Saints during his life as Pope, more than any other in history - I think He also realized that there are many many more Saints that one could possible imagine or declare for that matter. Being a Saint is not a get-out-of sin free card... there is only one man who was/is without sin; Jesus, and his mother would be alike, I'm certain God would have it no other way. So... we fall (every day), we get back up, each traveling along our own unique path toward our own unique calvary. I believe in St. Faustina's diary it states that it is EFFORT that God rewards and not the result. So let us all make a good effort, and leave the recognition to the Holy Spirit. Just remember that there are many more Saints in this world, the one reading this message could very well be one of them, in fact, I would venture to say that more likely than not - a Saintly man or woman is reading this comment of mine. May the love of God heal all painful memories and broken hearts, may He set your heart free in the Ocean of His Mercy and Love to attain that Sainthood he wishes for every single one of us. To all our guardian angels reading along in silence... Thank you for all that you do :), and to you dear Jesus, without you I am nothing, without love I am nothing. Thank you Father for my life, thank you Jesus for your love, thank you Spirit for my faith, thank you Mary for saying yes.
You could be a Saint in the making and not even know it, I personally never want to know if I am, don't want my ego to trip me up - if you catch my drift. Wishing all the unknown Saints a blessed All Saints Day.
Shalom

Sebastion, you are correct about saints being everywhere, and the Church, through our Pope Benedict has stated this! He said that ordinary, every day saints are everywhere in the world today. My husband and I are striving to be "ordinary, every day saints." God bless you and all of us on our journey.

Hi Fr. Barron, Thanks for a fantastic discussion about the saints and how it is God's presence / Jesus Christ's life / the Holy Spirit that flows through them and makes them fully alive and therefore more fully themselves for the benefit of themselves and all around them. If God is the Author of Life, it is only logical to realize that having God at the center of one's life will lead to life at its fullest! The burning bush is also evocative of the disciples at Pentecost when the Holy Spirit came upon them as a flame and gave them the life and energy to proclaim the Resurrection of Jesus Christ to all around them. Thanks also for your Catholicism video series that has been so very beneficial in showing how Jesus Christ is the true center of the many facets of Catholic Christianity. May God continue to bless your ministry! Best Regards, Felix Y Chau, MD

Following you understanding about the vast, multiplicity of types of individuals that become Saints one could think, as I do, that there is no one Church that expresses the Fullness of God. The proliferation of Christian churches is the branches on the Vine.

Sebastian, I just read your comments, months later, but they really touched me. As a new covert to the faith, I struggle continually with doubts about my own strength and direction, and it is good to hear from people who can give me hope: I was so moved by all you said, especially your words about Gods love healing all painful memories and broken hearts. And saints are a wonderful bridge between us and God. Their stories can lead and help us all, and I see even more now the great value in learning more about these brave and good people, whose only goal was to serve God as best they could. Perhaps if I strive in my own way to be an "everyday"saint, the answers will become clearer. Thank you for your beautiful words.
