Sermon 502 : The Narrow Gate : 21st Sunday in Ordinary Time

To gain eternal life is to participate to the fullest degree possible in the very life of God. It is to walk the path of love, surrendering to grace and allowing this grace to flow through you to the wider world. Is this an easy task? No. The Gospel of Luke tells reminds us that the gate is narrow precisely because it is in the very shape of Jesus Himself, and entrance through the gate involves conformity to his state of being. The path of love is traveled by taking up one's cross every day.

Your reflections are truly anointed. What turns me on are the many personal applications that one can draw from them. For example not to be obsessed with how many or how few will make it but just to get on with the job of following Jesus every day giving the task everything we have got. To strive with all ones heart. Kind of "What is that to thee? Follow thou Me!"
Please let's share these gems with as many as we can.

If I had listened to you today for the first time, I would have thought that you were one more preacher blowing smoke into the prevailing winds of the modern church. But I know better.
You reminded us just last week that we should not be afraid because the Father is pleased to give us the Kingdom. In fact the original Greek text uses the past tense (aorist): "was pleased". He did it already.
Today, you insist that it is hard to be like Christ and we need discipline. Of course it is hard. Our nature does not favor Christ-like behavior. But we are not being propelled by our nature, nor are we invited to practice spiritual calisthenics.
You know that in the Kingdom we are moved by the Spirit, not by our nature. And the Spirit is powerful (like the wind, you said on Pentecost; like fire too). We can produce the fruits of the Spirit because the Spirit was given to us. And that includes peace and joy, as well as self-control (the good old "enkrateia").
I wish you had better connected today's speech with your vision of Christianity. I will continue listening to you very attentively.
I am very grateful for your contribution to our spiritual life. I can barely wait for The Catholicism Project.

Dear Manuel Monguia,
I cannot speak for Fr. Barron, but nevertheless feel compelled to respond to your comments and sentiments.
1) There seems to me nothing inconsistent in a father, whether earthly or heavenly, being pleased to give a son or daughter the fulness of life through discipline. I am not a parent, but I have been a child. I am not quite sure how one would raise a child without some form of discipline. I ask you why, when employed by the Father of all creation, its employment is somehow suspect or malevolent.
2)We are not yet in the Kingdom. The Spirit is indis*****bly powerful - at least among Christians. That cannot be taken to mean humans are not succeptable to sin or, put another way, acting through free will in a way contrary to the Spirit. God's Kingdom is filled with volunteers - that is what makes citizenship within it meaningful.

Dear John C.,
I fear I am not very skilled at expressing myself in writing. I should have left the task of responding to your queries to those better qualified and skilled in such matters.
God Bless,

Manuel....I really think u should listen to Father B again..truly he is a scholar whose theology taught can be a benefit to many. Many of us are on different paths of faith and we can meet on this sermon if a heart is open to hear the message. I cannot see how anyone who loves Christ cannot be affected my this sermon...peace be with u.
