Sermon 22 : Pentecost : The Feast of the Spirit
6/3/2001
Please click the play button above to listen now.
Pentecost is the feast that recalls the descent of the Holy Spirit on the first disciples. It also celebrates the ongoing presence of the Spirit among us to this day. The Church of Jesus Christ is still gifted with the charisms of healing, speaking in tongues, visions, words of knowledge, teaching, administration, and prophesying. And all of these gifts are given for one reason: for the edification of the church and the fulfillment of Christ's mission.

John Tuturice
The punchline on this talk is absolutely correct. All gifts of the Holy Spirit are meant to built up the Church. However, the back history of the Pentacostal movement I think is dangerously glossed over. Time and history have shown that some, if not much, of the activity that has happened through the Pentacostal / Charismatic movement has its origins in the self or in Satan and his minions. I'm not saying that one should be giving an expose on the Pentacostal / Charismatic movement in the talk. Rather, to at least drop a line or two about prudentially discerning which spirit is actually at work. For example, how does Fr. know that what happened with the black Pentacostal preacher's church in 1906 was really the work of the Holy Spirit? After all, the devil can appear like an angel and the history of the Church has no shortage of impostors.

Hi John. on the chance you read this, i wonder if you could explain your conviction that sometimes the actions of the Pentecostal movement are guided by Satan? and in what part of Church history do we see 'imposters'? my knowledge of Church history is a bit blurry, so i would appreciate some explanation. thanks and may god bless.
